Humans have been spinning and using textiles for generations. Tracing its origins to prehistoric peoples until its perfection by the ancient Indians, Egyptians and Chinese, textile technology is dynamic and changes constantly as time flies. Who would even think that the modern-day mass production textile spinning equipment was derived from the crudest of tools?

Through history, the need for clothing has been the major driving force beyond the textile technology. Textiles of the past were made from hemp and other traditional plant and animal fiber sources, all geared towards the development of threads and yarns that would be used to make clothes, and some home furnishings like mats and carpets. The textile industry is also earning billions of dollars per year, thanks to both the need to have clothes and the desire to become fashionable.

Despite the obvious changes in time and in technology, one aspect of textile technology remained the same- hand-spinning. Hand-spinning is a popular handicraft and hobby to a lot of individuals. These people seem to enjoy spinning yarn from manual spinning wheels and creating hand-made textiles with intricate patterns and designs from looms.

For hobbyists to develop yarns out of mere fibers, they obtain and use a Schacht spinning wheel. It could be physically tiring to do manual spinning when done for extend periods of time. However, hand-spinning enthusiasts see the effort as something worth doing, especially when they are able to come up with great yarns and threads.

Schacht spinning wheels and other hand-spinning essentials can be purchased from hand-spinning specialty shops. Free hand-spinning workshops and demonstrations can be also given by owners and staff of these stores so that those with interest in hand-spinning can see first-hand how things are being done. The demand and renewed interest in hand-spinning by both hobbyists and specialty shops gave rise to businesses that build equipment for such purpose like looms and spinning wheels.

From the good old traditional Schacht spindles for hand-spinning to modern mechanized equipment to come up with threads and fibers for mass consumption, textile technology has come a long way since its inception million of years ago. As source of a hobby and a business, textiles will be a staple of human life, thanks to the need for clothing. Textile technology will remain dynamic, capturing the interest of both hobbyists and entrepreneurs.
