Looms are divided into two categories. These are mechanical function and loom size and feature. According to mechanical function, there are three kinds of looms, which are jack-type looms, countermarch looms, and counterbalance looms. Jack-type looms are suitable for high volumes of fabric. Their harness frames work separately. They are used for balanced and unbalanced weaving.



Countermarch looms are the most effective kind of looms. They combine the efficiency of jack-type looms and counterbalance looms. Like counterbalance looms, they weave quietly. Similarly, they are sturdy, and they can be used for both balanced and unbalanced weaving. On the other hand, counterbalance looms are used for balanced weaving. They have faster and softer threading than jack-type looms. They weave fabric quietly.

Aside from mechanical function, looms are categorized based on their size and features. There are five classes of looms: floor looms, table looms, rigid heddles, tapestry frames, and back strap looms. Floor looms have a wide dimension. They are used in weaving long fabrics and threads. They require moderate weight of looms for weaving. Weavers use them when designing carpets and mats.



Moreover, table looms are smaller than floor looms. They are portable and lightweight machines. You can take them on a car or plane. Some table looms, such as a Glimakra loom, have springs under the shaft. These hold the looms when they are folded. Jack-type looms are considered table looms.
